🔬 Why is germanium attracting attention in photonics research?
In the #PhotoGeNIC project, Umicore supplied specially engineered germanium substrates that enabled the development of innovative VCSEL technologies. According to Guillaume Curtois, germanium offers several advantages, including improved material properties and compatibility with silicon CMOS manufacturing environments.
The project successfully demonstrated VCSEL structures grown on germanium and explored their integration into downstream applications such as LiDAR systems, bringing photonic technologies another step closer to industrial adoption.
